Mission Statement and Pillars

Mission Statement

As the SGA Executive Board, our vision is for all students to feel that their perspectives are represented by the SGA and that they can be active agents in shaping the Mount Holyoke community.

Pillar 1: Shared Governance

SGA defines shared governance as student representation, participation, and/or decision-making power in College discussions that affect portions or the totality of the Mount Holyoke community. This requires integrating student voices and representation in the college's processes.

  1. Supporting all members of the Mount Holyoke community, including faculty and staff,
  2. Utilizing differing levels of power and participation based on the specific situation
  3. In the spirit of allyship and coalition-building, SGA supports all members of the Mount Holyoke community, including faculty and staff.

Pillar 2: Accountability

SGA recognizes that the student body is diverse and we each experience the institution of MHC differently based on the intersections of our identities. It is our duty to serve the student body by representing their concerns and holding the SGA Executive Board and College administrators accountable.

  1. Supporting accountability measures between students and the SGA Executive Board,
  2. Increasing transparency between College administration and the student body.

Pillar 3: Equity and Inclusion

SGA strives to create an inclusive and equitable space at all levels of student life and support a diverse range of student voices.

  1. Creating a platform for students to voice their thoughts, questions, and concerns relating to their experience as a Mount Holyoke student,
  2. Putting forth mechanisms for students to take action on their individual and collective concerns,
  3. Presenting as an inviting, community-oriented and engaging resource for students and student-led initiatives.

Pillar 4: Accessibility

SGA aims to ensure that all students have equitable access to resources and opportunities.

  1. Promoting intersectionality within and amongst the student body, fostering greater interconnectedness between students, staff, and faculty,
  2. Stimulating growth, equity, and inclusion throughout the community,
  3. Protecting the health and safety of all students across all identities.

Our Consitutional Mission

We, the students of Mount Holyoke College, have organized ourselves into a student government to:

A. Provide a productive tool for students in governing their non-academic lives and academic interests at the College,
B. Articulate and represent matters pertinent to the students and other constituencies of the College,
C. Establish and maintain communication channels among students, faculty, administrators, and trustees.
