Cheryl A. Flynn, MD, MS, MA

Director of Health Services
Medical Director

Role at Health Services (title, what you do): I wear several hats as the director and only physician staff at CHS. As director I oversee and am responsible for all things Health Services. As medical director, I supervise the medical providers and help create clinical standards for our primary care operations. As team doc, I medically supervise the athletic trainers and consult on health-related policies and protocols for the Athletics Department. As one of the primary care providers, I also see student patients at the health center and share in the on-call duties.

Special interests and skills: I’m a bit of an evidence-based medicine geek; incorporating behavioral health screening and motivational interviewing in the medical setting; furthering my understanding and role in promoting social justice.

When I’m not at work you may find me… digging in my garden, canning and baking the harvests, or maybe crafting in the basement.

One thing I do to support my own wellbeing is… name at least one thing each day for which I am grateful.

Susan Ferraro, RN

Assistant Director of Clinical Services

Joined Health Services in: November 2001

Role at Health services: Assistant Director of Clinical Services. I supervise the nursing staff and the medical assistants; I do direct nursing care with our students; and I managed COVID contact tracing/compliance on campus (and other public health issues when we are not in a pandemic!).

Special interests and skills: Talking with students about self-care and self-advocacy.

When I’m not at work you may find me… hiking, kayaking, biking or snowshoeing, and sometimes knitting.

One thing I do to support my own wellbeing is… make time for hobbies even when life is very busy.

Beth Donnelly Cabán, RN

Staff Nurse

Joined Health Services in: December 2023

Special interests, skills: I come to Mount Holyoke College with a background in reproductive care and am certified as a midwife assistant through The Farm in Tennessee and the Active Birth Centre in London. I’m excited to be part of the collaborative, holistic care provided by the health team to support students at MHC.

When I’m not at work you may find me... reading, writing, singing, cooking.

One thing I do to support my own well-being is... gathering with friends.

Jennifer Carlton

Phlebotomist and Clinic Assistant

Role at Health services: I am a Phlebotomist/Clinic assistant. I work in the Lab, drawing blood, doing point of care testing, and rooming patients in the clinic.

Special interests, skills: My experience as a parent has prepared me for college aged students. I am also really good at finding those “Hard” veins.

When I’m not at work you may find me... spending time with my family, outside gardening or hiking.

Phyllis Clapis, PT, MS

Special interests, skills: Examination and treatment of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.

When I’m not at work you may find me… teaching in the DPT program at American International College and enjoying the outdoors here in the beautiful Pioneer Valley.

One thing I do to support my own wellbeing is… get outside as much as possible and exercise regularly.

Special interests and skills: I have a holistic approach to health care and have a background in alternate modalities of healing. I truly enjoy connecting with patients and look forward to supporting the students at Mount Holyoke. I appreciate the dedication of the team in Health Services, as we promote optimum health and well-being for Mount Holyoke students.

Emily DeMartino DNP, APRN, NP-C

Nurse Practitioner

Role at Health services: As a nurse practitioner and primary care provider at Mount Holyoke, I work in Health Services and collaborate with students on their health-related concerns or needs. I work to provide health care that is collaborative, individualized, trauma-informed, evidence-based, and utilizes an anti-oppression lens.

I support students with the full scope of primary care services - everything from chronic condition management (like prescribing medication for depression, talking through the best medications for acne, or managing asthma symptoms) to evaluation after illness or injuries (like concussions, sprains, infections). I provide sexual and reproductive health care, which includes sexually-associated concerns, STI testing, contraception, pap smears, PrEP, and gender affirming hormone therapy.

Special interests and skills: Shared decision-making, gender-affirming care, sexual health and wellness, harm reduction.

When I’m not at work you may find me… Reading, gardening, hanging out with friends and family, comparing and contrasting local bakeries, providing detailed analysis of reality tv.

Education: Bard College 2010, BA. Thomas Jefferson University College of Nursing, BSN 2013, MSN 2014, Doctor of Nursing Practice 2020.

Certification: Family Nurse Practitioner.

Kim Evans

Medical Office Coordinator

Joined Health Services in: August 2007

Role at Health services: I assist students through Front Desk operations such as answering phones, scheduling and checking in for appointments, record releases/requests and prescription coordination. I perform various financial tasks such as purchasing, financial coding and account reconciliation, as well as, processing of student charges to the Student Health Insurance Plan, Student Financial Services and the college accounting system. I also process incoming student health forms and update records for compliance and sport clearances.

Special interests and skills: I am a mom and the nurturing side of me relates to this college population.

When I’m not at work you may find me…digging in the dirt in my backyard, at the beach - It is my true happy place, in the kitchen - cooking and baking for my family!!

One thing I do to support my own wellbeing is… walk and play with my dog, and spend time with family and friends.

Role at Health services:  I am a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. I work in the clinic alongside the providers, providing key components of patient-centered care to our students.

Special interests and skills:  I enjoy working in healthcare with a passion for growth in the industry helping our youth and community. I provide compassionate care with every word, task and every gesture. This is something that school did not teach, yet it’s a genuine trait that goes a long way.

When I’m not at work you may find me… Listening, dancing and singing along to music, watching documentaries, horror movies/shows and most importantly spending quality time with my family.

Johanna Milburn, MSN, AGPCNP, WHNP, CNP

Nurse Practitioner

Role at Health services: Certified Nurse Practitioner. I work to address and support patient health concerns/patient goals, provide education and promote wellness.

Special interests and skills: Understanding/supporting behavior change, being a compassionate/welcoming presence, learning spanish, fighting to protect abortion rights, and I am a (very-amateur) harpist.

When I’m not at work you may find me…walking my dog, at the park with my kiddo who was born in 2020.

Ryan Pryor, FNP-BC, CNM

Nurse Practitioner

Role at Health services: I’m a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse Midwife. I’m very happy to work in Health Services to provide primary care and GYN care to students.

Special interests and skills: Healthcare for transgender and gender non-binary adults and educating healthcare providers in these skills. I also specialize in gynecologic care, including genital infections and contraception. I am passionate about integrating principles of abolition and harm reduction into my practice, acknowledging and navigating the strengths and limitations of Western medicine. I approach healthcare from a weight-neutral or Health at Every Size perspective. My goal is to deliver individualized, trauma-responsive care, ensuring that every client feels heard and supported in achieving their healthcare needs and goals.

When I’m not at work you may find me… reading speculative fiction and spending time with my family

One thing I do to support my own wellbeing is…lots of low-impact body movement, dance parties with my kiddo and connecting with friends near and far.

Catherine Shankweiler, PT, MS

Physical Therapist

Role at Health services: Physical Therapist (1 day/wk) I evaluate and treat students with physical health conditions using various PT modalities, develop injury prevention programs and help students/athletes rehab from orthopedic injuries and surgeries; I may consult for the athletic trainers.

Special interests and skills: Physical therapist skills (30+ yrs experience), aquatic and land; exploratory and collaborative approach to wellness with college aged students & student athletes.

When I’m not at work you may find me… hiking/camping with my partner and dogs, playing tennis or the guitar, cycling, gardening.

One thing I do to support my own wellbeing is… attend to my spiritual self.

Role at Health services: I am excited to join the great team here in the Health Center. I look forward to providing students with caring and compassionate care.

Special interests and skills: I enjoy teaching health-related education and encouraging people to ask questions to expand their own knowledge on a variety of health topics.

When I’m not at work you may find me… cheering on my children at their various theater, music and sporting events!

Role at Health services: As a receptionist, I assist students at the front desk such as answering phones, scheduling and checking in for appointments, record releases/requests and prescription coordination as a Medical Assistant I prepare students for the their visit with the medical providers (measure “vital signs”, collect medical info); I may give a vaccine or perform a medical procedure.

Special interests and skills: I love to be creative, decorate,organize and clean my home
