Dean's Corner: December 8 Edition

Annmarie Murdzia - Friday, December 8, 2023
 Dean's Corner
The Dean's Corner! A special weekly message from the Dean of Students.
Dear students,

As the semester winds down and we inch closer to finals, I recognize that you may have mounting stress that naturally arises during this period, compounded by additional challenges and stressors that each of you may be grappling with individually and within our community.

I know I’ve said this before, and I will continue to encourage you to take care of yourself in the ways that work best for you. Above all, please know that you're not navigating anything alone. Be it through friends, student organizations, or the supportive network of Mount Holyoke's faculty and staff, there's a community here for you. Know that you can always reach out to me and my team at dean-students@mtholyoke.edu or stop by the Student Life suite in Blanchard 205. Please continue to lean on these connections and tap into the resources available. Here are a few more opportunities for community and support:
  • Mount Holyoke, in collaboration with And Still We Rise, is facilitating a support group tailored specifically for Middle Eastern North African (MENA) students, which kicked off this week. Additional sessions are scheduled from 4 pm to 5:15 pm on Tues, Dec. 12, Jan. 9 and Jan. 16. The group convenes virtually, and to receive an invite, simply text "HOLYOKE" to 978-523-2700. If you do not feel comfortable texting or do not have text capabilities, email me at dean-students@mtholyoke.edu and we will send you the information to join the group.
  • Additionally, the Office of Community and Belonging, in conjunction with Student Life, Student Government Association, and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, will host dedicated affinity spaces for campus conversations this Sunday, Dec. 10. These spaces aim to create a platform for engaging and meaningful intragroup conversations about current campus and global events. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss, share feelings, and exchange ideas for self-care and community support. For more information and to register in advance, visit Embark – Affinity Spaces Registration.
  • All first-generation and low-income students are invited to the Fearless First End of Semester Check-In on Monday, Dec. 11, from 5 to 6 pm in the Unity Center to discuss resources, ask questions, and connect with your Fearless First Community.
I also offer a few other opportunities to decompress — check the Events section below and Embark for more:
  • Tomorrow is Kendall Fun Night, where Kendall will stay open until 10 pm with fun activities like badminton, yoga, pickleball, open swim from 7-9 pm, plus more!
  • Join Student Involvement in the Community Center on Tuesday, Dec. 12, from 6 to 8 pm for No Study Zone for mini golf, a photo booth, crafts, board games, food and more. To request accessibility accommodations, please email student-involvement@mtholyoke.edu at least 72 hours before the event.
  • De-Stress Fest runs during reading days next week, with activities like Pet-a-Pet, Crafts and Cocoa, Late Night Bingo, and more.
A heartfelt appreciation goes out to the Office of Community and Belonging as well as the MHC student groups involved in orchestrating holiday celebrations that not only bring joy but also create meaningful moments of community and culture. In the header, you can find a photo of the Mari Llywd horse from PPAC’s Yule event and Dean Latrina Denson and Professor Kymberly Newberry at the Kwanzaa celebration, where they were honored with Elder Awards. Festivities continue tonight with the Hanukkah Party and the Christmas Party tomorrow – details are in the Events section.

Another reason to celebrate, the Shirley Chisholm LLC commemorated what would have been their namesake’s 99th birthday last week! (Photo in header)

Kudos to everyone who played a part in orchestrating a beautiful celebration of light and togetherness at Vespers over the weekend. (Photo in header)

A big congratulations to the equestrian team who capped an outstanding fall season of competition by claiming Reserve Champion honors at the Holiday Tournament of Champions over the weekend.

I want to thank everyone who shared their top song of 2023 with me last week! I always love learning more about you and your interests. Congratulations to the raffle winners, Cayla Ossen-Gutnick and Naomi Piper-Pell (make sure to look for an email with your e-gift card!) Stay tuned for a playlist compilation of our top songs of 2023 that we can listen to together.

To all those who celebrate or observe, Happy Hanukkah!

Warmly,
Marcella

Vice President for Student Life, Dean of Students

Be Well

Be Well is the College’s wellness program that provides students with strategies and opportunities to create their own path to wellness. It integrates four components essential to building a life that sustains and empowers: a healthy mind, a healthy body, a healthy community, and a healthy life. Make sure to check out Be Well events on campus!

Be Well, Be Welcome: Financial Literacy

Thank you so much to all who joined us for the Free Dinner, Free Money, For First Year's Financial Literacy event! Financial literacy is a confusing field that should be accessible to all. If you were unable to attend, no worries! You can find the information used in the presentation here, if you ever have any questions surrounding personal finance, insurance, credit scores, and more.
