On Thursday, October 28th, the SGA Students of Color Committee (SOCC), Division of Student Life, Office of Community and Belonging, Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, Weissman Center for Leadership, Alumnae Association, Office of Advancement, and the in celebrating the 12th annual Hortense Parker Day. The event will be held in the Blanchard Campus Center Great Room at 7:00pm.

Founded in 2009 by Ahyoung An '09 and Camila Curtis-Contreras '09, the Hortense Parker Celebration is an annual event that centers the lives, histories, and achievements of students of color at Mount Holyoke. The celebration is named for Hortense Parker, class of 1883, the first known African American student to attend Mount Holyoke, and our first known alumna of color.

Each year the celebration grows and evolves, with an underlying theme connecting the festivities. This year's theme, "Rewind and Reconnect", is to connect the community with the history of people of color on campus. This includes a museum created by past and present members of SOCC. The celebration will also feature words of reflection from President Sonya Stephens, Vice President Kijua Sanders-McMurtry, and SGA President, Lasya Priya Rao Jarugumilli '23, as well as spoken word and dance performances, followed by a dessert reception.

The keynote address will be delivered by Zakiya Collier, Digital Archivist at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture where she uses web archiving tools to expand the nature of archival collections to reflect 21st-century Black life and experiences
This year's alumni speaker will be Christine Harding, class 2016. Christine is one of the students who took part in the creation of the museum in 2014 and is the first SGA Students of Color Committee Chair.

Hortense Parker Museum 2021

The SGA Students of Color Committee presents The Hortense Parker Museum 2021: Rewind and Reconnect. This museum is a continuation of a project presented by the board of SOCC in 2016. This summer we were inspired to continue this project as a means of introducing and reconnecting with our history at Mount Holyoke after the separation we experienced in the past year. We created a timeline of National and Global events we found influential to the lives of students of color over time. The highlight of our timeline is the history of students of color at Mount Holyoke. We focused on some of the amazing alums of color who have graduated from Mount Holyoke as well as the amazing student activism throughout time on our campus.

The exhibit will be open in the Student Art Gallery and Unity Center for one week starting on Oct 28th. The SOCC board has worked hard and we're excited for you to see the results. Please take a moment to walk through the museum and read about some of our amazing history!
