English Country Dance is another kind of social dance, similar to Contra. Again, anyone is welcome to participate and no prior dance experience is needed. English dances tend to be less high-energy than Contra dances, but still involve quite a bit of movement. We are very excited to welcome our guest band, comprising Rachel Bell, Guillaume Sparrow-Pepin, and Emma Morrow and our caller, Imogen Mills. Like last time, if you are unwilling or unable to dance, feel free to sit and enjoy the music! Imogen will teach a beginner's lesson from 7:00 to 7:30 pm and will do a walkthrough before every dance for the rest of the evening. She will also call prompts for each figure during the dances themselves. Each dance usually lasts from 8-10 minutes. You may ask anyone to dance, and you are not required to say yes. The caller will use gender-neutral terms, larks and robins, for partner roles. There will be a break halfway through the evening. If you feel uncomfortable at any point during the dance, let the caller know. We recommend you bring a water bottle and soft-soled shoes that are easy to turn or spin in. Masks are not required, but feel free to wear them if you prefer. Please be considerate and do not come if you feel sick.
Bring your friends or come alone. We are very excited to see you there!
*Notes on accessibility: English dancing is fairly active as it requires long periods of walking. However, wheeled mobility aids can work well for various figures. The Blanch Great Room is wheelchair accessible. If there are any other mobility concerns, dance figures can be modified to suit. There will be amplified sound present. Any questions or concerns can be directed to Sage (jodoc22s@mtholyoke.edu) or Adeline (baugh22a@mtholyoke.edu).
