The MHC AWM is pleased to welcome Dr. Eliana Duarte, Maria Maria Castillo, and Amelia Tran as panelists for a discussion on applying to graduate school in the mathematical sciences. Our panelists will be joining us on Zoom, but we invite you to join us in-person in Clapp 306 with your questions! This event will take place on Wednesday March 23rd in the evening (tentatively 5-6pm).

Topics that will be covered in this panel include preparing for graduate school as an undergraduate, applying for graduate school, and experiences in graduate school.

Here are some introductions for our amazing panelists:

Dr. Eliana Duarte completed her PhD in Mathematics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2017. Prior to this, she graduated from Universidad de Los Andes with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics in 2008 and completed her Master's degree in Mathematics from Binghamton University in 2011. Her research interests include Computational Algebra, Geometry, and Algebraic Statistics. She has also held postdoctoral research positions with MathCore at Otto-von-Guericke Universit├ñt Magdeburg and the Nonlinear Algebra Group at Max-Planck-Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig. She is now a junior researcher at Centro de Matemática Universidade do Porto in Porto, Portugal.

Maria Maria Castillo graduated Cum Laude from Mount Holyoke in 2020 where she was a Mathematics major with a minor in Psychology and a nexus in Educational Policy and Practice. This spring, she will be finishing her Master's of Education in Teacher Education at Harvard University Graduate School of Education. She will then be continuing to Vanderbilt Peabody College to pursue her PhD in Leadership and Policy Studies as a Russell G. Hamilton Scholar, where she will focus on advocating for students of color who have been discouraged from pursuing mathematics.

Amelia Tran graduated Summa Cum Laude from Mount Holyoke in 2021 where she was a Statistics major with a minor in Data Science. She is now working towards her Master's of Science in Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania.

We look forward to seeing you there! Bring your questions to the panel, or submit a question for the panelists ahead of time here: https://forms.gle/AvknhcMNobpYs6if7
