Subject: Goodbye for now & Future of Gender+
Hi everyone,
First of all, if you’re getting this email, thank you for supporting Gender+ for the past four years. Whether you only came to one event or collaborated with us from another org or were a board member yourself, so much love and work went into this club. We are in the process of submitting our materials to the archives so if you respond to this email with a memory of Gender+ or picture we will add it to our submission.
This is a strange email to have to send but over the past years, the majority of the Gender+ board has had to step away from the board due to our workload as seniors and other responsibilities. We have put an intense amount of work into sustaining Gender+ or the last four years and re-creating it after it faded it out around 2017. We came to campus in 2021 where there wasn’t much on campus for us besides the school sponsored trans support group, and we knew there was much more our student community needed. That is still true in so many more ways than when we started. We know that Gender+ is far from perfect, but we don’t want to see our work fade away again and so we are sending out this email to ask if any student/s or campus organization is interested in reviving this club. Our main reason for asking this is because we know how much work went into restarting this and that we had to wait a full year before we could start being an official organization in the college with official events using the Marks cultural center and with Ways and Means budgets.
A new Gender+ with new leadership might have different priorities, goals, name, etc, but we hope that extending this offer might mean that there would be another base of support for all TGNC people on campus and that a new TGNC club would not have to start from scratch.
If no one has enough capacity to take this on we want to make sure that if Gender+ becomes defunct students still know it existed and know that the resources and programming that we created would be available for other organizations to use to support trans students. We plan on giving our materials to DEI and the archives and would be more than willing to share them with another organization or individual.
If you don’t know me, my name is Oakley Marton, I’m a senior and helped revive Gender+ my first year. My mtholyoke email is marto22o@mtholyoke.edu. You can reach out to the former Gender+ board at our personal emails after we graduate if you would like to learn more about the org or restarting it.
