My name is Phoebe Murtagh, and I am your 2020-21 Chair of Halls this year. I’m writing you all today on behalf of the Senate Team to give you an update on this year’s SGA structure and elections.
Because the majority of students are living off campus this semester, the SGA Executive Board has come up with a new system to represent off-campus students in place of Hall Senators. After evaluating several different options, we decided to split the student body into virtual “districts” by last name and ask each district to elect one senator to represent its interests. Each District Senator will function as a Hall Senator would, representing their constituents’ concerns relating to their living spaces (wherever that may be). In a year when student living arrangements are especially varied and geographically widespread, District Senators are going to be a hugely important part of SGA and student advocacy, and becoming a District Senator is a great way to get involved and make a difference for your fellow MoHos! Any currently enrolled student in good academic standing may run for District Senator.
Students living on campus will still have the opportunity to elect Hall Senators to represent their halls, as well as to vote for their District Senators. We ask that on campus students interested in participating in Senate consider running for Hall Senator first, as only students currently living within each hall are eligible to run for Hall Senator. As always, Hall Senators are a crucial part of SGA and student representation.
All students who are interested in running to be their District Senator should fill out this form by 5pm EDT Tuesday, September 22. (On campus students will be contacted separately with a Hall Senator form). After we get your intent to run, we will add you to the ballot for your district. Elections will open on Wednesday, September 23, and close at 11:59pm EDT on Thursday September 24. All currently enrolled students will be asked to vote for their District Senator. Only students currently living on campus will be eligible to vote for their respective Hall Senator. Even if you are not particularly interested in SGA, please do vote - Senators are an important resource for student advocacy on campus, and you never know when you’ll need a representative to call on!
The first Senate of the year will take place on Saturday the 26th at 10am EDT and kick off with Senator training. All newly-elected Senators will receive a Zoom link along with our congratulations. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. The Senate Team looks forward to working with you all this academic year!
On behalf of the Executive Board
