Dear Incoming Students,
Welcome to Mount Holyoke College! I am your academic dean, and in that role, I will help support you in your academic success here at the college.
The first thing I want to offer in that regard is academic advising by email beginning Oct. 30. The course catalog is available for viewing through my.mtholyoke.edu (use your Mount Holyoke email and password to log-in). As you construct your schedule, I will be happy to answer any questions you have. Please send me an email (kparent@mtholyoke.edu) with the subject "Advising for Spring" with your course selection/advising questions. I will answer your questions as quickly as I can. I hope this will help you feel comfortable and confident as you choose classes before meeting your academic advisor in January.
As you construct your schedule, here are some things to keep in mind:
-
Balance your schedule by both day of the week and type of class (science, humanities, social science, language, etc.)
-
You will have already chosen your First-Year Seminar, so be sure to build around this course.
-
If you would like to take a language, start by taking the appropriate language placement test found online.
-
When the online course catalog opens, please select your first choices, but also construct a list of alternate course choices. Many students will be registering for classes before it is your turn, so have a back-up plan in case your choices get filled up.
-
Some classes will actually have seats hidden for first-year students, so if there is an introductory class that looks full, keep watching the availability as your registration time approaches---more seats may become available!
-
Try to get onto the registration system as close to the time you have been given by the Registrar as possible to increase your chances of getting the classes you want.
-
There is a First-Year Guide to help you in this registration process. Within this page, there is a special section just for spring entrants.
-
You can always ask the Registrar's Office about registration and credit transfer questions by writing to registrar@mtholyoke.edu. Their phone number is 413-538-2025.
-
The selections you make in November can change during the add/drop period in January after you meet with your academic advisor.
As I mentioned earlier, I will be assigning you an academic advisor, with whom you will meet in January during the orientation program. Please complete the New Student's Initial Information for Advisor questionnaire found in your my.mtholyoke account by Nov. 30. We use this to help us choose an advisor for you.
That's all for now! I look forward to meeting you in January and hearing from you in the meantime.
Best wishes,
Kim
