Join us for a teach-in event, "What is Critical Mixed Race Studies?" featuring Professor Chandra Warring and Dr. Victoria Malaney-Brown. This session will explore the core ideas and significance of Critical Mixed Race Studies (CMRS) in understanding race and identity today.

Featured Speakers:

Professor Chandra D. L. Waring is a sociology professor at UMass Lowell whose research focuses on the experiences of the growing bi/multiracial American population. Her work examines the complexities of identities, including Black/white, Latinx/white, Asian/white, and Indigenous/white individuals. Professor Waring challenges prevailing narratives that depict the increasing bi/multiracial population as evidence of a less racially contentious society, instead highlighting the nuanced and often overlooked racial realities within these communities. Through her research, she aims to illuminate how privilege and racial identity intersect and influence individuals’ lived experiences.

Dr. Victoria Malaney-Brown is an educator and researcher specializing in race, racism, and the experiences of multiracial college students. She holds a Master of Education degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Malaney-Brown’s research addresses the unique challenges and opportunities faced by multiracial students in academic settings, focusing on their identity development and the impact of institutional structures on their experiences. Her work emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and representation in higher education, advocating for policies and practices that support multiracial students.
