The 2024 Common Read: “I Never Thought of It That Way”
Mount Holyoke College’s 2024 Common Read is “I Never Thought of It That Way” by Mónica Guzmán. You’re strongly encouraged to check out a copy from LITS or a local library, snag a copy from The Odyssey Bookshop or a local bookstore, or download the audio version online! Then, make use of the LITS Common Read Guide with guided reading questions, more about the author, additional resources, and more!
This timely guide addresses the crisis of broken conversations among confounded people and the author’s focus on politics aligns with this year’s United States presidential election and array of elections happening globally. “I Never Thought of It That Way” will provide you with tools to engage in respectful conversations across differing viewpoints, centering curiosity and respect. Guzmán will visit Mount Holyoke the week of November 18, concluding with a community-wide event. More details will be in the College’s calendar as the event nears.
Preparing for United States 2024 Elections
The 2024 election in the United States is coming up in November. For those of you who are eligible to vote in this election, this may be your first time voting. We wanted to take this opportunity to notify you of voter registration information, as well as other resources.
For those who are eligible and are seeking to register to vote, we encourage you to use the voter registration resources provided through the College. For those looking for more in-depth information, including how to check your registration status, finding out what is on the ballot in your state, and various voting FAQs, you can make use of the resources that were compiled in 2020 by MHC Votes! (a nonpartisan coalition of students and student groups working with staff and faculty to promote voter registration and voting).
Additionally, a reminder of the College’s policy on political activities on campus. If you have questions or need further clarification please contact dean-students@mtholyoke.edu.
Care and Support Resources
Amidst the challenges we face daily and the broader events affecting our world and country, I encourage you to take care of yourself and each other in the ways that work best for you. Take advantage of the care and support resources available to you. This site includes important phone numbers, support groups, and drop-in spaces, and information about connecting with staff in the Division of Student Life.
Please note, Counseling Services will reopen on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 8:30 am. In the meantime, the 24/7 CareLine remains accessible. Call 413-538-2037 and follow the prompts to speak with an off-site clinician who will assess your situation and assist with next steps (please anticipate a brief delay as your call is routed). Additional sources of support can be found on the care and support website. Additional support is available through the Counseling Service website.
Be on the lookout for another update email in August, which will include logistical information about move-in.
We hope you have a wonderful summer, and we look forward to welcoming you back in September!
Warmly,
Rachel
