Dean's Corner: September 13 Edition

Annmarie Murdzia - Friday, September 13, 2024
 Must Read   Dean's Corner

Health and Safety Notice: Make sure you’ve read and bookmarked the College’s respiratory illness, including COVID, protocols! We are following the Centers for Disease Control current guidance. For detailed information about testing, visit the CDC’s webpage Testing for COVID-19.

As a reminder, we had limited amounts of COVID self-test kits for students in Blanchard 205 and at this time all kits have been picked up. We will be restocked with another limited supply starting sometime next week and at that time students will be able to pick up one test kit per person up until October 11. Please make sure you are preparing ahead of time to identify any needed respiratory illness and COVID supplies. We also want you to know that U.S. households will soon be eligible to order 4 free COVID-19 tests at COVIDTests.gov at the end of September, and a reminder that the College shuttles run to Holyoke Mall, CVS, and Stop and Shop.

The Dean's Corner! A special weekly message from the Dean of Students.

Dear students,

Happy Latine/Latinx Heritage Month! (It starts on Sunday)! Our month-long festivities will begin with a kickoff celebration on Monday, Sept. 16, at 7 pm in the Great Room in Blanchard featuring a very special keynote address by author Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez! Throughout the month, there will be many exciting events to look forward to, including Homecoming at the Ortega, Noche Latina, and more.

We want to thank everyone who helped make Nightfest bigger and brighter than ever. It was amazing to see so many of you at the event, and we deeply appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in bringing this vibrant celebration of our community to life. (Photos in header and footer)

Wonderful to see so many of you at the election debate watch party on campus hosted by the Office of Student Involvement and College Dems. (Photo in header!) There are more election-related resources available on our Election 2024 webpage!

As we enter election season, the 2024-2025 Common Read, “I Never Thought of It That Way,” has phenomenal tools for exercising your curiosity skills and reaching across knowledge gaps to connect to people (make use of the Library Guide, too!) – it is also a great resource for engaging in difficult conversations with folks who may think differently than you.

The first Interfaith Lunch of the semester, hosted by the Office of Community and Belonging, took place yesterday. If you didn’t know, these lunches provide a warm and inclusive space for learning, discussion, and community-building, all while sharing a delicious meal. All are welcome!

Earlier this week, the first Interfaith LLC gathering of the year brought together students from diverse faith and spiritual backgrounds. This event continues the community-building work that started when the Interfaith LLC was launched in 2017. (Photo in header)

Mountain Day, one of Mount Holyoke’s oldest traditions, is just around the corner! Make sure you read the details page to understand when it starts (7 am when the bells ring out!) and ends (4 pm) along with how to get to and from the mountain and how to prepare (bring water!). When do you think it will take place this year? Don’t forget to share your prediction using the Guess Mountain Day form.

A big shoutout to the Office of Student Involvement for organizing the Involvement Fair on Sunday and to the many student organizations who participated, showcasing their passions and creating opportunities for others to connect. (P.S. I loved seeing you all at the fair! Don't forget to email me at dean-students@mtholyoke.edu if you would like to have breakfast with your org as part of Meals with Marcella!) I hope all who attended the fair found a student organization that resonates with their interests! (Photos in header)
