For Black history month the Eliana Ortega Cultural Center will be having a movie showing and a guided discussion after. The movie that we will be showing is called Pelo Malo, directed by Mariana Rondon. The movie explores topics, such as racism and homophobia, through the lens of a 9-year old boy. This young boy has become obsessed with straightening his curly, thick hair. The film dives deep into the stigma around curly hair being described as "pelo malo" and such. After the showing we will have a guided discussion on the film, specifically shedding light on the stigma of curly hair and beauty being taught through a eurocentric lens.
Snacks will be provided.
