As part of Latinx Heritage Month, a panel of professionals will discuss their journey working in today's non-profit world as Latinx, including dealing with microaggressions, tokenism, and assimilation. Get an idea of the challenges faced and how they can be overcome.

A Q&A will follow the panel.

Yaldira Felix Castro, Career Advisor from the Career Development Center, will moderate this discussion.

The panelists are Jenise Katalina, Vice President of Family Services at Square One; Xiomara Albán DeLobato, Associate Director of Diversity Recruitment and Enrollment with the Office of Admissions at UMass Amherst; and Shaitia Spruell, Senior Program Officer at the Massachusetts State Treasurer's Office.

Square One

Jenise L. Katalina, MSW, LCSW is the Vice President of Family Services at Square One, a community based non-profit in Springfield, Massachusetts. 

In addition to her executive position as the Vice President of Family Services at Square One, Jenise is the Vice President of the Board and Co-Executive Director of the Women of Color Health Equity Collective. Most recently, Jenise became the founder of Rise Leadership and Coaching, LLC, an equity and inclusion firm working with businesses to implement inclusive leadership strategies and supporting women of color in achieving career success.



Before joining Square One, Jenise served for six years as a supervisor in a Springfield-based residential program for latency-age children struggling with emotional and behavioral challenges related to trauma. Other prior experience includes the supervision and coordination of after-school programs and gang aversion programs for teen youth with the YMCA of Greater Springfield.



Jenise received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Westfield State University and her Master of Social Work degree from Springfield College.

Xiomara Albán DeLobato is a proud Latinx native to Springfield, MA, and has been deeply committed to social activist work throughout her personal life and professional career. She earned a dual B.A. degree in International Affairs and Spanish from the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and a Masters in Business Administration from the College of Our Lady Of the Elms. She has dedicated her work towards academic equity, equality, and accessibility for underrepresented and historically marginalized populations.



 



Currently serving as the Associate Director of Diversity Recruitment and Enrollment with the Office of Admissions at UMass Amherst and a board member for the Springfield Public Forum, Veritas Prep Charter School, and Girl's Inc. of the Valley - Xiomara uses her passion, training, and professional skills to change the trend of inequitable and inaccessible education and move towards building inclusive excellence in her communities.

Shaitia Spruell is the Senior Program Officer for the Massachusetts State Treasurer’s Office. Shaitia received her Associate’s Degree in Liberal Studies at Holyoke Community College before obtaining her Bachelor’s of Science in Business at Bay Path University, through The American Women’s College Program. Shaitia is currently working on her Master’s of Business Administration at Fitchburg State University while juggling being a mom. Shaitia also sits as a Commissioner on the Massachusetts

Commission on the Status of Women, where she advocates for better opportunities for women and girls across the commonwealth. Shaitia previously sat as Board President for Neighbor to Neighbor’s Education Fund and Director of Communications for the Young Democrats of Massachusetts Black Caucus.
