The Community Care Circle, Microaggressions in Latinx Communities, is a brave space designed for Latinx students to engage in self and collective reflection about their experiences with multiple types of microaggressions and their effects on mental health. Participants will be asked to speak about their lived experiences with this issue and encouraged to request what they need to thrive unapologetically.

This circle is led by Ysabel Garcia, Estoy Aqui LLC founder, and former MHC Graduate Assistant for Residential Community and Inclusion.

Ysabel Garcia, MPH, (she/her/hers) is a first-generation Dominican immigrant and psychiatric survivor who experiences suicidal thoughts since childhood. She works to dismantle the myths and sanism surrounding mental health and suicide in her community through public speaking engagements, social media outlets, and leadership roles. In 2020, Garcia founded Estoy Aqui LLC, an educational initiative that focuses on the sociocultural factors contributing to suicide risk in Latinx and Black communities by providing social justice training, Community Care Circles (CCC), and culturally relevant outreach. Her most recent efforts include La Cultura Sana Outreach Project which provides dialogues and resources on suicide prevention to key cultural figures in the Latinx and Black community, such as Barbers and Hairstylists, in an effort to reduce psychiatric and crisis hospitalizations in her community.
